I understand why LinkedIn exists and believe it has its benefits, but there is definitely way too much hype surrounding it. I think its major issue is that its not selective in any way. There's way too man people on LinkedIn. A friend can invite anyone. I think this takes away from its credibility. Perhaps if only those with verified jobs could do the invitations this problem would be ameliorated. From an employer's point of view, I would think a certified universities' career center and web portal is a preferred method and has a stronger pool of applicants.
As a side note, LinkedIn is growing so fast that Barack Obama is using it to fuel his campaign....

That is why I am beginning to hate facebook. There is no selectiveness anymore. Anyone with an email address can join. From what you said, LinkedIn seems like it is the same way. Therefore, it definitely takes away its credibility and if I was a business executive I would not take LinkedIn seriously.
I completely agree with what Dave said. There has to be selectivity for the networking service to be atractive. I know a very prestigious networking service called Small World. You have to be invited to get inn and after you get invited, you have to be approved by a board. Plus, to find someone with invitations is very rare. Because of the exclusivity of the website, eveyone wants to be a part of it. The website also has several perks for the members.
i agree that selectiveness, or lack there of, for these networking sites have ruined some of them.. facebook has been butchered in my mind because it went from only being college kids, which was the purpose, to high school kids and now everyone.. but i guess its hard to draw the line when the companies that own these networking sites are making a ton of money, and they just want more and more
This is probably one of the most stupid articles I have ever read.
These websites leave it up to you the person on the website to decide how selective or non selective want to be. If some random person joins FB then as long as you don't add them as a friend then how does it affect you.
Oh and some kind of check system that slows the whole joining process down would kill these websites. You guys would have failed if you were in charge of FB.
It's the lack of a check system that has made online social networking sites like StinkedIn and Disgracebook so run-of-the-mill, MOtown.
